In the USA, there was an attack in New Orleans, as a result of which at least 15 people were killed. A Tesla car exploded outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. Ukraine stopped transit of Russian gas. Here are five things to know on Thursday, January 2.
1. Attack in New Orleans
Shamsud Deen Jabbar, 42, driving a white pickup truck, broke through police barricades and drove into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ tourist hub, the French Quarter. He then took out a gun and started shooting, slightly injuring two police officers. Officials reported that the number of people killed in this attack reached 15 people. 30 people were injured.
The FBI said in a statement that the perpetrator of this attack was killed and an ISIS flag was found on his car, and therefore, work is ongoing to determine the connection and affiliation of the possible perpetrator with terrorist organizations.

2. A huge explosion in front of Trump’s hotel
A Tesla car exploded outside the Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas. Local authorities reported that one person was killed and at least seven people were injured.
Citing a law enforcement source, CNN reported that investigators are treating the explosion as a possible act of terrorism. The car had to be loaded with a large amount of fireworks, fuel and have an explosion system.

3. Transit of Russian gas through Ukraine was suspended
The Ministry of Energy of Kyiv announced that at 7 o’clock local time (6 am in Poland) Ukraine stopped the transit of Russian gas through its territory “in the interest of national security”. – This is a historical event. Russia will lose markets and suffer financial losses as well. The Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Halushchenko said that Europe has already decided to give up Russian raw materials.
On Wednesday morning, the 5-year agreement between Moscow and Kyiv on gas transit ended, and Ukraine did not renew it.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on the X website on Wednesday that “stopping the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine is one of the biggest defeats for Russia, which uses this raw material as an energy weapon.”

4. Poland assumed the presidency of the Council of the European Union
Poland took over the presidency of the Council of the European Union after Hungary. The swearing-in ceremony of the presidency will be held on January 3.
The priorities will be military, energy, economic, food, health, information and civil security.

5. New countries joined “Full Schengen”.
From January 1, control at the dry borders with Bulgaria and Romania was canceled. After joining the European Union in 2007, both countries are seeking to join the full Schengen area.
The region currently covers 29 countries (25 of the 27 member states, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland) with a total population of 420 million. Internal border control with Cyprus has not been abolished yet, and Ireland is not part of Schengen.
