Russian media and authorities report that Ukrainian drones attacked Saratov and Engels in Russia, among others. Videos posted on social media show a huge fire at the Engels oil depot, where Tu-95 bombers are stationed.
Reuters news agency reports the night attack of Ukrainian drones on the Russian cities of Saratov and Engels (both in the Saratov region, about 750 kilometers from the nearest Ukrainian-controlled border). The cities of Saratov and Engels are located opposite each other on the right and left banks of the Volga. There is an airfield in Engels, where TU-95 strategic bombers are stationed.
Roman Busargin, the governor of the region, said that both cities were the target of a large-scale drone attack and damage to an industrial plant. He did not say whether Engels Air Force Base had been hit. There is no information about the injured.
Media: fire in an oil warehouse
According to the report of the online newspaper “Kiev Independent”, with reference to the reports of the Russian Telegram network, a huge fire broke out in an oil warehouse in the city of Engels at night. Videos circulating on social networks confirm this.
Residents of the city said they heard at least five explosions before the fire broke out. The Ministry of Defense of Russia reported that 11 Ukrainian drones were shot down over the Saratov region.
In total, Russian defenses were supposed to destroy 32 drones last night. Also, four drones were shot down in the Kursk and Rostov regions, three drones in the Belgorod and Bryansk regions, two in the Krasnodar region and one in the Volgograd region, and four in the Sea of Azov. The Ukrainian side has not yet commented on this attack.
Another attack on Saratov and Engels
This is another Ukrainian drone attack on Saratov and Engels. Previously, Ukrainians attacked in August last year. Then, debris from drones damaged several buildings. Russian media also released footage showing a drone crashing into a 38-story skyscraper in Saratov.
In the city of Engels, the upper floors of residential buildings were damaged. The Engels strategic base was also attacked in March last year and in December 2022.
