– He travels around Europe begging and blackmailing people for money. This has to end – these are the words of the Slovak Prime Minister criticizing the Ukrainian President. Robert Fico has decided that he is “sick of” Volodymyr Zelensky. At the same time, he pointed out that, unlike Kiev, Russia has “never deceived” its own country. These words are a reaction to Russia’s suspension of gas shipments through Ukraine.
Slovak Prime Minister Roberto Fico answered a parliamentary committee about his visit to the Russian Federation in connection with the termination of Russian gas transport to Slovakia through Ukrainian territory. During the meeting, he said Ukraine was an “unreliable” economic partner and that he was “disgusted” by President Zelenskiy’s actions. He added that he was sometimes “sickened” by Ukraine’s leadership.
– He (Zelensky ed.) travels all over Europe, begging and blackmailing others only to demand money. This just has to end, Fico said.

The Slovak prime minister said his country was disappointed in cooperation with Ukraine, but said he could not say the same about Russia, which he considered a “reliable partner” when it came to energy supplies.

The agreement between Russia’s Gazprom and Ukraine’s Naftogaz on the transportation of Russian gas within the territory of Ukraine expired on January 1, 2025. Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced that Kiev would not extend the contract. As a result, Slovakia, which consumed Russian gas through Ukrainian territory, was cut off from Ukraine.

Therefore, the Prime Minister of Slovakia visited Russia and discussed cooperation in the energy field with President Vladimir Putin. His visit took place in December, before the gas deal officially ended.
This is the first meeting between Fico and Putin since 2016.
Relations between Slovakia and Ukraine have deteriorated due to the transportation disruption. Slovak President Peter Pellegrini also canceled a trip to Kiev, saying it was “unlikely” for him to travel to the Ukrainian capital for now. He cited Ukraine’s suspension of Russian gas shipments as the reason for the decision.
