This 32-year-old man died in his home due to carbon dioxide poisoning. Before the fire broke out, he locked himself in a room, refusing to evacuate because he felt bad. – He said: Mother, leave me, but no mother can leave her child. My arm was broken, I couldn’t pick him up and I couldn’t move him, Sykes told Australia’s 10 News First station.

Sykes’ mother spoke to TV channels about her rescue efforts after noticing that the building where her son lived was on fire. He said he tried to call 911 but could not because “all the phone lines were down.” He also tried to put out the fire himself using a garden hose. But drought prevented this work. Unable to call for help on the phone or pull the man out himself, he decided to get into the car and go to the fire station, which is several hundred meters away.
