Politico Portal intercepted recordings of phone conversations and documents from spring 2021 showing that the Belarusian regime used migrants as a weapon to destabilize the European Union as part of its “revenge” of European sanctions.
– The minister has issued clear instructions – said Mikhail Bedunkewicz, a senior official of the local ministry and administration, in the disclosed records. – We should not worry about migrants in transit to Europe – added the politician.
Later in the conversation, he assured that “everything will be fine”, since the immigrants do not settle in Belarus. He stressed that he will not stop anyone who wants to go to the border.

Documents intercepted by Politico reveal how Belarusian authorities have made it easier for migrants to enter the country and enter the European Union illegally.

They were often group formations and involved both business and tourist travel. Immigrants were also offered trips to state-owned enterprises, hunting, visits to spa centers, and even trips to the circus.
However, many migrants confessed that they were informally promised easy access to the EU.
Travel packages cost between $6 and $15,000. Travelers flew to Belarus with airlines such as Fly Baghdad, Iraqi Airways and Belarusian Belavia. Later they were quartered in a government hotel.

As the number of migrants rapidly increased, Belarusian border guards began to help migrants push directly to the border.
“At first there was no structure,” they charged before in an unorganized manner,” another Belarusian border guard told the portal Alaxandr.
