Sri Lanka was struck by a drop in electricity nationwide, with buildings, including hospitals which were to count on generators to provide electricity.
The failure, which started around 11:30 am, the local time (6:00 am GMT), has not yet been fully fixed.
Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said that energy reduction was caused by an emergency in a substation and that it worked to restore food.
The Minister of Energy, Kumara Jayakody, would have blamed a monkey for having caused the breakdown, saying that the animal came into contact with our grid transformer causing an imbalance in the system, “according to the AFP news agency.
“The engineers take care of him to try to restore the service as soon as possible,” said the minister.
The CEB said “we strive to restore power failure on the scale of the island as soon as possible”.
Hospitals and companies of the island nation of 22 million people have used generators or inverters.
Sri Lanka experienced generalized failures during its economic crisis in 2022.
