Biren Singh’s resignation occurred almost two years after violence broke out in Manipur
The Indian government brought the northeast state of manipur disturbed under direct days of the federal regime after the resignation of chief Minister N Biren Singh.
Singh, from the Bharatiya Janata party to the power of India (BJP), left on Sunday after having been faced with months of pressure to resign.
Ethnic clashes broke out between the majority majority of the State and the minority communities of Kuki in May 2023 on economic advantages, land rights and employment quotas.
More than 250 people were killed in the conflict and tens of thousands of displaced people.
The state made the headlines in the world in July 2023 when a video showing two women parades naked by a crowd has become viral, arousing indignation in India.
Although the extent of the troubles has reduced since the peak in 2023, the divisions between communities persist and violent incidents continue to occur.
Singh’s position has become more and more untenable in recent months, Kuki groups accusing him of promoting the Meitei community, of which he is a member – an accusation he denied.
The media indicated that there was also an increase in dissatisfaction against him within the BJP.
BJP leaders tried but did not agree to agree with someone to replace them as chief minister.
Thursday evening, the office of President Droupadi Murmu announced that the federal domination – known as the President’s rule in India – had been imposed in the state.
“After having received a report from the governor and after examining the report and other information that I am received, I am convinced that a situation appeared in which the government of this State cannot be exercised in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution of India, “the press release indicates.
The last session of the Manipur Assembly took place in August and Monday is expected to be the first day of the new session, but the governor appointed by the federal government Ajay Bhalla published a declaration declaring the “zero and non -avenue” session.
Earlier, the members of the opposition congress party declared that they would bring a request without confidence against the chief minister during the session.
Congress chief Jairam Ramesh told the news agency Ani that Singh had resigned when he felt that the motion would be adopted. Ramesh called the Federal Minister of the Interior, Amit Shah, to resign.
Opposition leaders have also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has not visited the state since the start of violence.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court of India intends to plead against Singh deposited by a Kuki organization which accuses him of playing a direct role in the food of violence. The petitioners submitted audio bands disclosed to support their complaints.
The court asked for a medico-legal report on recordings before the next hearing. Singh denied any reprehensible act.
What is Manipur’s conflict?
The conflict implies the two largest ethnic groups in the state, the Meitei majority and the Kuki minority, and their battle on earth and influence.
Tensions boiled in May 2023 when Kukis began to protest against requests from the Meiteis requests which receive official tribal status. The Kukis argued that this would strengthen the strong already strong influence of the Meiteis on the government and the company, allowing them to buy land or settle in predominantly Kuki areas.
But there are a myriad of underlying reasons. The Kukis say that a war against drugs led by the government led by Meite is a screen to uproot their communities.
Since the violence, Manipur has been divided into two camps, Meiteis living in the Imphal Valley and the Kukis living in the surrounding regions. Borders and buffer zones guarded by security forces and community members separate the two regions.
Efforts to organize peace talks between communities by federal and state officials have so far did not end the conflict.
