A crush at New Delhi station left around 18 dead and at least 10 injured.
Thousands of people would have piled up in the station on Saturday evening while they were trying to get on delayed trains.
Four of the victims were children, while 10 were women, according to a list published by officials.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that his thoughts were “with all those who lost their loved ones” in a post on X.
Crowds are regularly reported in India where there is frequent overcrowding during religious events, festivals and public spaces.
The incident occurs weeks after 30 people were killed at a crush before dawn at the religious festival, Kumbh Mela, in northern India, where tens of millions of Hindu were Gathered to bathe in the waters of the sacred river on the holy days of the six -weekly week.
In Delhi, witnesses told the BBC Hindi that a “big crowd” had gathered at the station, through which many people were traveling to and from the Kumbh Mela, which is held in the city of Prayagraj in the ‘Near state of the Uttar Pradesh.
According to officials, two trains had been delayed at the station, while a third – heading towards Prayagraj – was waiting to leave.
Ruby Devi said that the crowd of the main station of the Indian capital had been so great that it was unable to enter inside.
Umesh Giri, whose wife Shilam Devi died in the crush, said that the crowd was “uncontrollable” while he was trying to get on the Prayagraj Express.
Dharmendra Singh, who also went to Prayagraj, told India’s PTI news agency that there were “many more people than ever at this station”.
“In front of me, six or seven women were taken to civilians.
KPS Malhotra, police commissioner (railways), said that the authorities were investigating what had led to crushing.
“This has happened due to a delay in two trains arriving and more people gather at the station,” he said.
Opposition leaders criticized the government, accusing them of administrative failure.
“Given the large number of followers going to Prayagraj, better arrangements should have been taken at the station,” Rahul Gandhi, the head of the opposition to the Parliament of India, posted on X.
