Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become one of the few world leaders to join Truth Social, the social media platform belonging to US President Donald Trump.
In his first article on Monday, Modis shared a photo with Trump taken in Houston, Texas, during his visit to the United States in 2019 and said he was “delighted” to be on the platform.
Trump launched Truth Social in February 2022 after losing the presidential election against Joe Biden and was temporarily prohibited from major social networks like Twitter and Facebook, who accused him of incitement to violence.
At 3:30 am GMT, Modis had 21,500 subscribers and followed Trump and the US vice-president JD Vance.
Monday, Trump shared an link with an interview that Modi made with the podcaster Lex Fridman where the Indian Prime Minister spoke of a range of subjects, in particular his life path, the Gijarat riots of 2002 and the relations of India with China.
A large part of the functionality of Truth Social is identical to X, formerly Twitter. Users are able to publish “truths” or “retractions” as well as send direct messages. Advertisements on the platform are called “sponsored truths”.
Truth Social belongs to Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG). Trump made public company in March 2024 and now has around 57% of the company’s shares.
The investment company whose headquarters are in Kuwaiti has global investments and some former candidates for apprentices also have important issues, although these assets are currently subject to legal fighting.
The American president has 9.28 million followers on Truth Social, much less than the 87m he has on X.
According to data compiled by Bloomberg, traffic at Truth Social remains tiny compared to its competitors, its total user numbers following X of 400 times.
TMTG declared losses of $ 400 million (308 million pounds sterling) in 2024 and a turnover of $ 3.6 million. It has a market assessment of $ 4.45 billion.
