Wilson, NC – August 8, 2024 – Barton College is pleased to announce it has received a $6 million grant from the Wilson Healthcare Foundation to support the development of the College’s School of Health Sciences. This cornerstone gift represents a significant investment in the future of health care education and highlights Barton College and the Foundation’s joint commitment to improving the quality of life for Wilson residents.
“Our strong partnership with the Healthcare Foundation demonstrates our mutual commitment to improving the health and wellness of our community,” said Barton College President Douglas N. Searcy, Ph.D. “This direct and meaningful investment in our College of Health Sciences will in turn have a direct and meaningful impact on Wilson. Barton will leverage this grant to educate and graduate students who will make an immediate, positive impact on the workforce.”
Barton College’s School of Health Sciences will be a vital part of education and healthcare in the region, and the grant will support the construction of a state-of-the-art facility and the purchase of advanced educational technology with the goal of helping to build a healthier community.
“The new school will feature a unique simulation hospital model that allows students to engage in real-life scenarios and utilize technology to advance their learning,” said Dr. Kevin N. Pennington, Barton College vice president for academic affairs. “Instruction will emphasize cross-training from a variety of academic perspectives, including mental health and psychology, as concepts essential to the education of future nurses and allied health professionals. Additionally, the priority of rural health care will be central to Barton's teaching and delivery.”
The School of Health Sciences offers undergraduate programs in areas such as nursing, exercise science, psychology and public health (expected to begin in fall 2025), as well as master's programs in kinesiology, nursing and future nurse practitioner programs. These programs are designed to meet the growing demand for skilled health professionals, and Barton faculty are committed to providing hands-on learning experiences that prepare students for successful careers.
“This grant marks an important milestone in Barton College’s ongoing efforts to expand our educational offerings and impact in eastern North Carolina,” concluded Kelly Tarrant, Barton College’s vice president for institutional advancement. “We are grateful to the Wilson Healthcare Foundation for believing in our work, investing in our vision, and spearheading change for our students.”
