BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – Joel Barish posts videos to his social media about his experiences traveling as a deaf global adventurer.
A native of California's Bay Area, Barish has traveled to all 50 states and 103 countries.
Barish, who calls himself a global adventurer and aims to educate people about the deaf experience, spoke about his journey at the Bismarck Veterans Memorial Public Library.
“I want to give deaf people access to education and share that with other countries that don't have as many rights as deaf people in the United States,” Barish said.
During his adventures he met deaf people from all over the world and learned a lot from them.
“People think of sign language as something international, but every country has its own language,” Barish says, “but it doesn't take long for people to be able to communicate with each other even though they use different sign languages.”
Barish wants to show the world that it's possible to live an adventurous life without being deaf or needing to travel with an interpreter.
“We can do anything. My videos show people what we can do, what deaf people can do, it doesn't matter if you're deaf or not, you can do anything you put your mind to,” Barish said.
He is a representative and advocate for DeafNation.
Barish can be found on Facebook, Instagram and on his website.
