It looks like football is back. It's always exciting when the calendar turns to August, even if it's just preseason football. The Green Bay Packers kick off their preseason play on Saturday against the Cleveland Browns.
Here are six players to watch throughout the match.
Javon Bullard, DB
Bullard is expected to start alongside Xavier McKinney at the back end of Green Bay's defense, and the versatile rookie defensive back had an impressive training camp and played multiple games with the ball during Family Night in Green Bay.
Bullard seems to do something impressive every time he practices, showing why Brian Gutekunst and Co. think so highly of the versatile defensive back. The former Georgia Bulldog will be one to watch when he takes to the court on Saturday at Cleveland.
Evan Williams, D.B.
Williams, along with McKinney, are forcing Bullard to work hard. Williams was a constant presence in games during his time in college, and that has continued into training camp. The fourth-round pick has been playing a lot on the practice field, and his playmaking ability could get him on the field more frequently for head coach Jeff Hafley.
Marshawn Lloyd, RB
Instant offense. The former track star was a sparkplug, averaging over seven yards per carry and 24 runs of 10+ yards last season at USC. Both Brian Gutekunst and Adam Stenavich raved about his speed and explosiveness. It will be interesting to see how well the rookie running back performs on Saturday, but he may not need many touches to make an impact.
Lucas Van Ness, D.E.
Van Ness' breakout season begins Saturday. Last year's 13th overall pick finished his rookie season with a bang. In his final eight games, Van Ness recorded four sacks and 13 pressures. If Van Ness can continue that success in Year 2, the Packers will have the makings of a potent pass rush.
Tyrone Hopper, LB
Hopper was listed on the injury report (ankle) during practice on Thursday and may not play Saturday. If cleared to play, the third-round rookie is likely to see a significant number of snaps. Hopper has shown the fluidity and speed to match coverage and sideline-to-sideline distances and has developed into an impact player for head coach Jeff Hafley's defense.
Shawn Ryan, OL
With Jordan Morgan out with a shoulder injury, Ryan has a chance to show why he should still be considered for the starting right guard position. Given his history as an offensive tackle at UCLA and Green Bay's obvious lack of depth behind Rasheed Walker and Zach Tom, it wouldn't be surprising to see the former Bruin play on the outside against the Browns.
