BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – We're all in a hurry, but traffic jams can ruin your day. In a state where road construction never ends, an advancement in concrete testing technology could help speed up the work.
The North Dakota Department of Transportation, along with 11 other states, has participated in beta testing of the Rebel Sensor, a new technology designed to make concrete repairs more efficient.
This will allow highway crews to reopen roads more quickly. The North Dakota Department of Transportation is currently testing the concrete's strength by taking samples, aging them and then inducing cracks in a lab.
“What's revolutionary about this sensor is that it measures the physical properties of concrete. The acoustic vibrations give us information about the strength of the pavement without the need for laboratory testing,” said TJ Edwards, who works in the Department of Transportation's Materials Research Division.
Edwards said that if adopted, the technology would be especially beneficial for road repairs in urban areas, where work that takes even a day longer than planned can cause major disruption to drivers and businesses.
