Perhaps the final player synonymous with the Giants' third World Series victory during their dynasty era was Madison Bumgarner, a pitching force that started six games in October of that year, pitching two shutouts and recording the final three outs of Game 7 as a relief pitcher.
The 10-year reunion scheduled for Saturday at Oracle Park will feel hollow without him.
But the elusive Bumgarner will attend, along with a guest list of 36 players, coaches and front-office members from the 2014 championship team, the Giants announced Friday. Notable absentees include still-playing players Bruce Bochy and Pablo Sandoval, as well as Tim Lincecum, who has kept a lower profile than Bumgarner since retiring.
Bumgarner has not formally announced his retirement, but he has not pitched professionally since being released by the Arizona Diamondbacks last April, in the fourth year of an $85 million contract he signed prior to the 2020 season. Seemingly content to retreat to his ranch in North Carolina, Bumgarner has made few public appearances since being fired.
Lincecum made a rare appearance at Bochy's farewell ceremony at Oracle Park before the final game of the 2019 season, but missed the 2012 team's 10-year reunion and it appears he won't be able to attend this one either.
Bochy, obviously, isn't retired — he had other commitments this week, including a visit to the White House with the 2023 champion Texas Rangers to celebrate their most recent World Series win — and Sandoval, who is playing for the Staten Island Ferry Hawks of the Atlantic League after a brief stint in spring training, shows no signs of slowing down.
Fans are encouraged to be in their seats by 12pm on Saturday for the start of the celebrations.
