RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) – The Great Plains Tribal Leaders Health Committee hosted a backpack distribution and health fair on August 10th at the Main Street Plaza.
The event was designed to ensure families had everything they needed for the first day of the new school year in one place: backpacks filled with school supplies, water bottles, oral care kits, pens, pencils and vaccinations were distributed free of charge.
Health was a central issue for everyone, not just children. Heather Brings Plenty, project manager at Honor Every Woman, provided information on the HPV vaccine and early symptoms of breast cancer. The HPV vaccine prevents 90% of HPV-related cancers, including cervical cancer.
“Well, there will be a lot of moms here and of course grandmas and aunties bringing their kids to pick up their backpacks,” Brings Plenty said.
Good Weasel said they wanted to do something different for this event.
“We normally do activities in the community, but this time we wanted to be the focal point and provide things like a splash pad for families so they can really have a good time,” Good Weasel said.
To foster that environment, there was free ice cream and music playing throughout the day.
