The first week of the NFL preseason did not go unscathed.
Injuries are bound to happen in contact sports, just like in NFL football games, and there's a reason why teams don't use their starters in the preseason and make sure their top players are healthy by Week 1 of the regular season.
Of course, there's still a month until the league's regular season begins, so players injured in Week 1 of the preseason have plenty of time to recover. Here are the most notable injuries from Week 1:
The Falcons placed third-round draft pick, outside linebacker Brallen Trice, on injured reserve after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament in a preseason game.
Hollywood Brown, WR, Chiefs
Brown made his Chiefs debut on Saturday against the Jaguars, but his playing time was brief. After appearing on Kansas City's opening drive with an 11-yard catch, Brown was listed as questionable due to a shoulder injury. Coach Andy Reid detailed the injury after the game, saying Brown suffered a dislocated sternoclavicular joint. Reid said Brown may be out for some time.
Lock is expected to miss the game after straining his hip flexor and oblique muscles late in the first quarter of the Giants' preseason opener against the Lions. The Giants' backup quarterback is expected to play more time in the game than is normally scheduled.
Daniel Jones and Tommy DeVito are the only two healthy quarterbacks remaining on the team, with DeVito serving as the backup until Lock returns.
Wiggins left Friday's preseason opener against the Eagles with a mild shoulder sprain after intercepting three passes on the first series. He left the game with the injury while making a tackle in the third quarter. The Ravens are optimistic Wiggins will be able to return in Week 1 and are taking a day-to-day assessment.
Fautanu left Friday's preseason opener against the Steelers with a knee injury and was diagnosed with a mild MCL sprain. The Steelers' first-round draft pick was seen with ice on his left knee after the game. The Steelers do not believe the injury is serious.
Bell, a Browns wide receiver, left the first half of Saturday's preseason game against the Packers with a quadriceps injury and is uncertain about his return. He is competing for playing time behind Amari Cooper, Elijah Moore and Jerry Jeudy.
Rookie running back Loyd, a projected third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, became the fourth running back to touch the ball in the game after suffering a hamstring injury in the third quarter of Saturday's preseason game against the Browns.
Thomas limped off the field late in the first half of a preseason game against the San Francisco Titans. After being evaluated in the medical tent, the cornerback was seen being carried off on a stretcher to the locker room. Head coach Kyle Shanahan later revealed Thomas had a broken forearm. As for a timetable for his return, Shanahan said, “It's going to be a while.”
Neighbors was stepped on during practice on Sunday and is suffering from what appears to be a mild ankle sprain.
