There is a new sexual identity that many people identify with: abrosexual. The term has spread on social media and has been embraced by many. An abrosexual is someone whose sexual orientation changes over time. Such a person may be attracted to one gender at one point in their life and another gender at another. They may also have varying levels of sexual attraction.
These people may go from heterosexual to homosexual to bisexual or asexual. They may identify as “gay” at one point but then become attracted to all other genders. Sexual orientation may fluctuate from a few hours to a few years.
People on social media have said that after feeling confused by experiencing different levels of sexuality, the term has given new meaning to their lives.
One such person, Emma Flint, wrote in an essay for Metro that she “first came across the term abrosexuality while reading the Instagram page of Zoe Stoller, a US-based creator, educator and social worker who aims to raise awareness of the LGBTQ+ community.”
“You know that scene in cartoons where a light bulb appears over your head? That's exactly how I felt when I read their posts. I finally felt like I was being recognized.”
Emma says people around her doubted her sexuality because one day she was lesbian and the next she was bisexual, but having a word for her sexuality made her feel more confident.
Abrosexuality is similar to gender fluid, with the only difference being that a person's sexuality is fluid. Queer sex researcher Nadège told Cosmopolitan, “There are no blanket cues, personality traits, or physical aesthetics that indicate a person's sexuality, and this is true for abrosexuality as well as any other sexual orientation or gender.”
How is it different from abrosexuality?
Being abrosexual doesn't depend on how long a person may or may not remain attracted to one gender.
However, this should not be confused with pansexuality or polysexuality, which means that a person is sexually attracted to people of all genders and is not influenced by their gender or gender identity. A polysexual person is attracted to many genders, but not necessarily all genders.
TikTok user lucaismagic recently announced that they identify as abrosexual. “It's not something that gets talked about a lot, but it's very true,” they say.
Thanks to the video, many people were made aware of its existence and felt relieved: “Wow, it has a name??? I always thought that,” one user commented.
