DOTHAN, Ala. (WTVY) – The Alabama Department of Public Health (ADPH) recently received a nearly $3 million grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to fund maternal health resources.
The $2.975 million CDC Enhanced Review and Surveillance to Eliminate Maternal Mortality (ERASE MM) grant will fund ADPH’s Maternal Mortality Review Program (MMRP) over the next five years and will expand support to the Alabama Maternal Mortality Review Committee (AL-MMRC).
These funds will expand AL-MMRC’s data capabilities and reduce the time the committee spends preparing reports, thereby improving staff’s ability to obtain records and interview families, and expanding outreach to educate the public about maternal mortality prevention.
“The Alabama Legislature has generously supported the MMRP since its inception, including staffing, outreach efforts, the AL-MMRC and the maternal autopsy program, and we are grateful for the Legislature's continued support as we work to improve maternal health in Alabama,” said Carolyn Miller, perinatal division chief for the Department of Family Health Services.
Established in 2018, the AL-MMRC is comprised of multi-state medical and specialty experts and stakeholders familiar with maternal health and available resources in the state. The committee meets several times throughout the year to review records and sources of information regarding maternal deaths that occurred during pregnancy or within one year of childbirth or death to determine if the death was preventable and provide recommendations to prevent future deaths.
