Donald Trump has announced that he has sent “many American soldiers” to Panama, where he is scheduled to be stationed in the country. The US President explained that it was to secure the Panama Channel against China’s influence.
Donald Trump’s words fell a few hours after he returned from Panama, US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegestes. The Pentagon head announced that he had made a “very successful” visit, in which he signed “several historic contracts.”

One of them applies to American ships, which means having “flow and free voyage priorities” through the Panama Canal. The United States has also received permission to arrange American troops in Panama.
– The channel is currently under very good control. We moved many soldiers to Panama and secured some areas that once belonged to ours (…) Now we’re in control again – Donald Trump said.
The Pentagon Head warns China
During his visit to Panama, Pete Hejis turned his attention to the growth of China’s activities in the Western Hemisphere, describing it as a potential threat to the Panama Canal. “Beijing is investing and operating in the region, striving to gain military advantage and unfair economic benefits,” he argued.
Hegeseth also appealed to local rules for regional cooperation to scare China and counteract the threat from cross-border drug cartels and uncontrolled immigrants.

As the AP agency reminds us, Donald Trump’s management expressed dissatisfaction with the fact that despite the treaty’s commitment to protecting the channel, the United States had to pay for the movement of warships between the Atlantic and the peaceful seas. The two countries ultimately agree to strengthen coordination in the security area and work on a mechanism to repay the fees American warships pay to swim the channel.
The Chinese Embassy in Panama was critical of the US government on social platform X. Washington applied “scary mail” to pursue its own interests, saying that Panama’s decision regarding commercial partners is her “sovereignty law (…) and that the United States has no right to interfere.”
