Herr sang the U.S. national anthem, joined by gymnastics star Simone Biles and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass. This will be Los Angeles' third time hosting the Olympics, after 1984 and 1932. Experts say the meteors will look like “fireballs” in the night sky. They are best seen in the Northern Hemisphere. The Perseids will last until September 1. Multiple meteor showers occur each year and no special equipment is needed to see them.

PARIS (AP) — The U.S. Olympic Committee said it will appeal U.S. gymnast Jordan Childs' request to return the bronze medal she won in the floor exercise at the Paris Olympics. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) invalidated an appeal by Childs' coach that elevated her to third place in the floor exercise, finding that the appeal exceeded the one-minute, four-second limit for the judges' review. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) said Saturday night it would respect the court's decision and move Barbos to third place. The International Olympic Committee confirmed the ruling on Sunday and said it would reallocate the bronze medal from last Monday's women's floor exercise final to Romania's Ana Barbos.

Large desert tortoise rescued after escape from ostrich farm three miles off Arizona highway
PICACHO, Ariz. (AP) — State Department of Public Safety troopers recently helped rescue an escaped giant water turtle that was trying to cross Interstate 10 near Picacho. According to The Arizona Republic, a driver contacted authorities on July 30 to report that the turtle was trying to cross the busy highway. The driver and a State Department of Public Safety trooper were able to get the turtle off the road unharmed and return it to its habitat at an ostrich farm three miles away.
Browns' plan to move to new dome falls apart as county backs city's renovation plan
CLEVELAND (AP) — The Browns' plan to leave their lakefront and build a new domed stadium in suburban Cleveland is facing a major obstacle. In a letter to team owners Dee and Jimmy Haslam, Cuyahoga County officials said they support a proposed $1.2 billion renovation of the team's current stadium and are committed to keeping the NFL franchise in downtown Cleveland “for generations to come.” Earlier this week, the team released renderings of a $2.4 billion state-of-the-art stadium and entertainment complex to be built in Brook Park, Ohio. County officials argue a new stadium “doesn't make financial sense” and are urging the Browns to renovate their current home, which opened in 1999. The city is providing $461 million for the renovation.

World Boxing Association announces major membership increase after Paris Games to save Olympic boxing
PARIS (AP) — The World Boxing Association is set to expand its membership to more than 50 countries within weeks of the conclusion of the eventful Paris Olympics. World Boxing President Boris van der Vorst told The Associated Press he was leaving Paris more confident that boxing could achieve “the biggest comeback in Olympic history.” World Boxing replaces the Russia-led International Boxing Association, which was kicked out of the Olympics. Boxing is not currently on the program for the 2028 Olympics, and the International Olympic Committee has repeatedly said the sport needs a new governing body.
