This initiative will reduce CO2 emissions from road transport by approximately 90%.
Global steelmaker ArcelorMittal is launching a low-carbon transport service for the delivery of steel to its European customers, which will reduce CO2 emissions from road transport by around 90%, ArcelorMittal said in a press release.
“Tests have been successfully carried out to transport steel products between ArcelorMittal plants and customers using a range of low-carbon transport solutions, including electric trucks and trucks powered by HVO (hydrobiodiesel),” the statement said.
Currently, deliveries between ArcelorMittal's plants in eight countries – Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Spain and the UK – are carried out by low-carbon trucks. Steel products are currently delivered to customers in Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Germany and Poland by low-carbon transport.
In 2023, ArcelorMittal Europe shipped 27.5 million tonnes of steel. Road transport accounts for around 38% of total product shipments and this mode of transport has the highest CO2 emissions, averaging 65g CO2/km per tonne of steel. Using trucks that run exclusively on HVO could reduce carbon emissions by 80-90%.
The initiative was launched at the end of 2022. As part of the pilot test in 2023, 190,000 tonnes of steel were transported over a total distance of 579,830 km, resulting in a reduction of 794 tonnes of CO2 (-82% compared to diesel trucks).
Various tests of electric trucks have also been carried out in Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, France and Germany.
In January-June 2024, ArcelorMittal Europe's steel production rose 7.8% to 15.64 million tonnes compared to the same period in 2023. Steel shipments in January-September were 14.64 million tonnes, down 0.5% year-on-year, of which 10.51 million tonnes were flat steel (-0.08% year-on-year) and 4.14 million tonnes were long steel (-1.7% year-on-year).
ArcelorMittal is one of the world's leading steel and mining companies, with operations in 60 countries and productive assets in 18 countries.
