ALBANY, GA (WALB) – ASPIRE Behavioral Health Mental Health Clubhouse serving adolescents and young adults held its first annual Field Day on Albany State University’s West Campus. The Aspire Games were held to celebrate children’s mental health awareness.
ASPIRE Clubhouse wants to eradicate the stigma surrounding mental health issues and illnesses in children and young people. To start a conversation about mental health among South Georgia families, ASPIRE Clubhouse hosted an Olympic-style athletics day packed with food, music, relay races and other games.
“We're just competing. It's a friendly competition to raise awareness, and of course the winner gets a big trophy, but this is one of many events we do throughout the year to help bridge the gap between people who are suffering in silence,” said Marlon Jones, Program Manager for ASPIRE Mental Health Clubhouse.
Between competitions, speakers took to the stage to share facts and stories about mental health. Marlon and the rest of the Aspire community want to continue this event in the future. ASPIRE hopes that next year, more local organizations will join the event to raise awareness and eliminate the stigma surrounding childhood mental health illnesses.
