If extremists emphasize identity politics, moderates must emphasize the strength of our shared identity and lay out a positive national vision for the countries we love and a strong commitment to global solutions. Although the New Right is gaining strength in some regions, the overall balance of power in Europe remains unchanged. | Mathieu Delaty and Hans Lukas/Getty Images And while extremists emphasize simplistic approaches, centrists must explain how the solutions proposed by the New Right are unworkable and how much worse off people's lives would be. European centrism also needs to address the conflicting tensions between greater integration and…
Tim Waltz is Kamala Harris' running mate, and J.D. Vance is Donald Trump's running mate, so the twain will never meet. Right? No. At least not when it comes to their (and Lana Del Rey's?) alleged favorite soft drink: Diet Mountain Dew. Last month, Vance reportedly made a lame joke about drinking soda (later mocked by Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear) and toasted it with a soda during a public appearance on Newsmax, declaring, “This is good stuff. High in caffeine, low in calories.” Meanwhile, according to locals, Waltz testified several years ago that a “bottomless can” of soda was his…
During the offseason, the Diamondbacks endorsed a risky but brilliant idea. They were mocking the Phillies and their rabid fans when they came to Chase Field in mid-August, celebrating last year's accomplishment more than four months into the new season and giving away replica championship rings to 20,000 lucky fans. Clearly, they chose to show off one of the worst moments in Philadelphia history. Brave. Bravo. And now the moment has come. Fortunately, the Diamondbacks are exactly where team executives hoped they would be when they made that bold deal with famed ring manufacturer Jostens. They're now a team with…
OAKLAND — The Athletics activated Mason Miller from the injured list on Wednesday morning and then promptly brought their All-Star closer back for a 3-2 win over the White Sox on Wednesday. After the Athletics took a three-run lead in the seventh on consecutive hits by Armando Alvarez and Zach Geroff and a sacrifice fly by Lawrence Butler, Miller took to the mound in the ninth for the first time since breaking the pinky finger on his non-pitching hand on a padded training bench after pitching on July 22. The fiery right-hander showed no signs of rust, pitching a perfect…
The Guardian's take on the tech bubble burst: AI will pay the price for inflated expectations | Editorial
Has the artificial intelligence bubble burst? This is the question on many people's lips this week as we witnessed the stock market crash, wiping out billions of dollars in the value of technology companies that have boomed since the advent of large-scale language models. It was economist Hyman Minsky who believed that Wall Street was over-incentivizing risk and tricking investors into parting with their cash for the wrong reasons. The result was a devastating boom-bust cycle. His model started with “displacement,” which means investors get excited about things they don't fully understand, like AI.Last year, OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot reached 100…

UN health agency convenes experts to determine whether Africa's MPOX epidemic is a global emergency
GENEVA — The director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) said Wednesday he will convene a group of experts to determine whether the spread of poliovirus in Africa warrants declaring a global emergency. Speaking at a press conference in Geneva, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the organization had decided to ask independent experts to advise the agency “as soon as possible” given the spread of MPOX cases outside Congo. Last week, the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that MPOX, also known as monkeypox, has been detected in 10 African countries this year, including Congo, which accounts…
