The rapid spread of wind and solar power has ignited a race to experimentally capture and store that energy. Several Houston startups say they've developed ways to store energy underground, and one just announced its first commercial project. Sage Geosystems called the project “the first geothermal energy storage system that stores potential energy deep underground and supplies electrons to the electric grid” in an August 13 announcement. The company plans to install the system next to a solar farm in South Texas. Energy storage allows excess electricity to be saved for periods of low generation, so that, for example, solar…

Artificial intelligence is a revolutionary technology, but without proper cybersecurity it can also pose serious threats to businesses. Earlier this year, Palo Alto Networks (PANW -1.03%) reported a 10x increase in the frequency of email-based phishing attacks compared to the same period in 2023. The spike is linked to malicious actors using generative artificial intelligence (AI) to rapidly create realistic content to trick employees into handing over sensitive information. This shift in tactics means businesses need to think differently about cybersecurity. Palo Alto is building AI into many of its products to make them faster and more automated, helping them…
Given India's linguistic diversity, digital content companies are already facing challenges in accurately displaying and translating content. Google also faced similar issues with its recently launched AI summary in India. The company introduced Hindi support for AI Overview in India in early August. Indian users can also switch between Hindi and English without leaving the search page. However, the feature is unfortunately inconsistent. One simple example is a selection of results from Google's blog: The GIF showed the answer to the question “Cheeni ki jagah chai mai kya daal sakte hai?”, which means “What is the substitute for sugar in…

The Directive requires all member states to impose a minimum excise tax ( ) on cigarettes and other tobacco products. Excise taxes are typically levied on cigarettes, alcoholic beverages, soda, gasoline, insurance premiums, recreational activities, and gambling, and account for a relatively small and variable portion of state and local, and to…
Understand how severe weather in the U.S. and Europe affects us and how it works » Severe Weather in Europe
Seasonal weather in the United States and Europe is heavily dependent on ocean currents in the North Atlantic, particularly the Gulf Stream, so it is important to understand these currents, their location, and what changes in them might mean for future weather and how they might affect winter climate. This is the first article in our Gulf Stream series, taking a comprehensive look at this ocean current – where it is, how it works, and the important role it plays in winter weather in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. What is the Gulf Stream? The Gulf Stream is a powerful…
Blocking the “bursts of nitric oxide” produced by a fungus may hold the key to saving the world's most popular banana from extinction. Studying how the fungus causes Panama disease and how it protects itself from nitric oxide-induced stress could open new avenues for eradicating the devastating infection in banana plants. To produce fruit with minimal seeds, bananas are propagated clonally, resulting in little genetic diversity. This, combined with the dense monoculture plantations in which bananas are primarily grown, makes them highly vulnerable to diseases and pests. One major threat is Fusarium wilt (also known as Panama disease), caused by…
