Dangerous events in the mountains of Poland. On Monday, two hikers fell in an avalanche while trying to climb Risi in the Tatra Mountains from a height of about 400 meters. On the same day, Goprists rescued a man who was partially buried in the ground in Babia Gora region. Everyone was very happy, none of the tourists were seriously injured.
According to the Tatra Voluntary Search and Rescue Service, on Monday, before nightfall, two tourists reported to the rescuers at the Morskie Oko refuge after falling about 400 meters under an avalanche. They tried to capture Rysi.
“The tourists can say that they are extremely lucky, because despite the avalanche on the ground and many rocks left behind, they received only minor superficial injuries,” we read. By the way, it was mentioned that two tourists did not have Avalanche ABC, i.e. detector, probe and shovel.
As reported by the TOPR news agency, “the main mass of snow stopped a little below the narrowing in Wilki Volove Leb, and a deposit was found at a depth of more than three meters. The avalanche was caused by tourists at an altitude of 2070 meters above sea level. from 40 degrees”.
The message reminds that despite the small amount of snow in the Tatra Mountains, you should be alert and a basic knowledge of the topography of the area is necessary. The second level of avalanche risk is concerned. “There are places of broken ice and rocks next to wind-blown snow deposits. Only an avalanche can have serious consequences,” the mountaineers warned.
Tourists were buried in the Beskids due to an avalanche
On Monday afternoon, rescuers from the Beskidzka GOPR team received information about a hiker who was partially buried in an avalanche in the area of the refuge ruins on the Babia Gora green trail. The man could not get out on his own. He called for help through the “Ratunek” program. Beskid rescuers from Markove Szczawin and the Podhale group came to the rescue.
By 18:00 two rescuers reached the tourist. He was conscious, unharmed, but severely hypothermic. The rescuers, after digging out the tourist, dressed him in dry and warm clothes.
After warming up, the man was able to move on his own. Together with the rescuers, he went down to Markove Shzavini, and from there he was taken to the Lipnicka Pass. Gopro officials reported that he drove home in his private vehicle in good condition.
Conditions for hiking in Babia Gora region are difficult. The first and lowest level of avalanche danger is in effect. 25 centimeters of snow will fall in Markove Shzavini, 40 centimeters in the highest regions of Babia-Gora, and even 80 centimeters in some places. Small avalanches and landslides occur.
