A charity providing start-up packs to newborns reported a “shocking” increase in references for its services.
Baby Basics, based in Wollaston, Northampothire, provides Moses baskets filled with bed linen, toiletries and clothing to support vulnerable families.
The charitable organization said that it now helped one in 16 babies born in the county.
Sabrina Oakey, co-founder of Baby Basics Northampton, said: “Unfortunately, in the past five years, we have seen a 97% increase in our references, which is shocking.”
Founded in 2013, the charitable organization provides support for new mothers faced with financial difficulties.
If it is purchased, the average cost of each start -up pack would total around £ 450.
Friday, Baby Basics distributed its 3000th package in Crowing Together, a wellbeing charity, based in Northampton.
Ms. Oakey said that the extent of the support provided by the charitable organization is “both humiliating and inspiring”.
She also pointed out that references now come from a range of sources, including NHS professionals, food banks, charitable organizations, social services and leading workers.
“We see more and more families of workers coming to us. When both parents work and still cannot afford essential elements, this is a problem that we should not have,” added Ms. Oakey.
