UHealth ranks as one of the region's leading healthcare providers in a variety of specialties and for the treatment of specific diseases and conditions.
UHealth's Bascom Palmer Eye Institute continues to be the No. 1 eye hospital in the nation, according to the newly released 2024 U.S. News & World Report “Best Hospitals” rankings.
This marks the 23rd time (21st consecutive year) that U.S. News & World Report has ranked Bascom Palmer among the best eye hospitals in the nation.
U.S. News & World Report also ranked UHealth's (University of Miami Health System) Neurology/Neurosurgery program 25th in the U.S. Two programs, oncology and geriatrics, were recognized as “high performing,” an award given to hospital specialties that rank in the top 10 percent of all hospitals evaluated.
“We are proud of all of our programs that continue to excel in serving our patients, and while it's gratifying to be recognized by other organizations, what is most rewarding is the patient outcomes that continue to excel,” said Dipen J. Parekh, MD, chief operating officer for UHealth, executive dean for clinical affairs at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine and founding director of the Desai Sethi Urological Institute. “This is a testament to the dedication and excellence of our clinical faculty and staff.”
“We are honored to be recognized for providing excellent patient care and once again be recognized as a national leader in the dynamic, life-changing field of ophthalmology,” said Eduardo C. Alfonso, MD, the Katherine and Stanley J. Glaser Professor of Ophthalmology and director and chair of Bascom Palmer. “The health of our patients inspires us to excel in patient care, vision research, ophthalmic education and surgical innovation.”
The Christine E. Lynn Rehabilitation Center for Miami Paralysis Care Project at UHealth/Jackson Memorial Hospital continues to rise, moving up to 31st in the country this year from 45th in 2023. Regionally, UHealth Tower maintained its ranking of 3rd in South Florida and 9th in Florida.
This year, Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, South Florida's only National Cancer Institute-designated cancer center, received “high performing” designation in the areas of colorectal cancer surgery, lung cancer surgery, prostate cancer surgery and gynecologic cancer surgery, as well as leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
U.S. News also awarded “high performing” status to UHealth specialties, including aortic valve surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart failure, kidney failure, pneumonia and heart attack. The procedure and condition ratings for these specialties focus on individual procedures and conditions that are specifically and more commonly required.
“We are recognized for treating the most complex illnesses, from Bascom Palmer, urology, pulmonology, Sylvester cancer care, cardiology and geriatrics, and there is no doubt that research, coupled with the excellence and compassion behind our care, is what drives our success,” said Henry Ford, MD, MPH, dean and chief academic officer of the Miller School.
“Our experts are advancing the field of neurological disorders through integrated and individualized approaches,” said Jose Romano, M.D., professor and chair of the Miller School of Neurology. “We translate the latest discoveries into the clinical care provided in recognized centers of excellence, spanning all neurological specialties and fulfilling our mission of academic medicine.”
“Our surgeons are recognized for developing innovative surgical techniques and exploring new ways to advance care for patients with brain, spine and neurological disorders. This approach, along with major research advances in neuroscience, has earned them the respect of their peers,” said Alan D. Levy, MD, professor and chair of the Miller School of Neurosurgery, the Robert M. Buck Distinguished Professor of Neurosurgery and chief of the Department of Neurosurgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital.
U.S. News & World Report's rankings are based on data from nearly 5,000 medical centers and survey responses from more than 30,000 physicians. The complete 2024-2025 rankings are available online and in the U.S. News “Best Hospitals” 2024 guidebook.
