Police have arrested a man who stabbed at least two people in Berlin. The attack occurred earlier at 12:00 in the Charlottenburg district. Even before police arrived, the attacker was subdued by bystanders. Police said the man was showing symptoms of a mental illness.
“Shortly before noon, emergency services were called to Charlottenburg due to a man suspected of injuring several people, possibly with a knife,” local police said on social media.
According to local media, the attack took place at a supermarket on the corner of Quedlinburger Strasse and Sommeringstrasse. Shortly after, the suspect left the store and continued his activities near the hotel next door.

The man was supposed to be incapacitated by those who witnessed the incident before police arrived at the crime scene. According to information provided by Bild, several passersby attacked and overpowered the attacker.
The assailant was arrested after police arrived. Berlin police said he was a Syrian national living in Sweden. Preliminary findings suggest he is exhibiting symptoms of mental illness.
He is said to have stolen the knife he was planning to use in the attack from a supermarket. Police have already conducted their first witness interviews.

The service has reported two injured people requiring treatment. Both were taken to the hospital. One person has already been sent home.
The motive for the attack remains unclear. German police are investigating the incident on suspicion of attempted murder.
