Tough times for aviation. After a series of recent plane crashes on December 29, tragic moments took place at the Muan airport in the southwest of South Korea. Reuters has shared a video of a witness who recorded the moment of the explosion of the passenger plane. Footage shows a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 landing without extending the landing gear. The pilots did everything they could, but the high speed did not allow safe maneuvering. Instead of stopping, the plane hit the wall with a heavy impact and a huge explosion occurred. As a result of the tragedy, 179 people died and only two people survived. These are the crew members who were sitting in the back of the plane when it crashed. According to preliminary findings, the cause of the tragedy was a collision with a bird, which caused the landing gear to malfunction. The pilot reported the collision with the bird to the air traffic controllers and gave a “mayday” signal. Investigators are looking into possible causes of the crash, including bird involvement and weather conditions. Flight data and cockpit voice recordings (black boxes) have already been recovered, helping to determine the exact course of events. The runway at Muan Airport will be closed until January 1.
