Dacia Sandero remains best-selling car despite SUV boom
In July 2024, BMW surpassed Tesla to top the European EV sales charts for the first time. European car sales increased 2% in July, but BEV registrations fell 6% to 139,300 units. The Dacia Sandero was the top seller overall, making VW the top brand.
Surprisingly, BMW topped the European electric vehicle sales charts for July 2024. The German automaker narrowly beat Tesla, selling 14,869 BEVs that month. This was a massive 35% increase for BMW over the previous year and the first time it has led Tesla in the European EV market.
Despite losing its top sales position, Tesla maintained its position as the best-selling EV with 9,544 registrations of the Model Y. The new Volvo EX30 secured second place, with the VW ID.4 and Tesla Model 3 completing the top three in the European EV rankings.

BMW's iX1 SUV and recently redesigned i4 Gran Coupe came in sixth and seventh in the BEV model rankings in July. BMW's other electric models also boosted performance, outperforming rivals from Audi and Mercedes.
According to data from JATO Dynamics, European car sales in July 2024 totaled 1.03 million units, up 2% year-on-year. However, BEV sales fell 6%, with registrations dropping to 139,300 units and market share falling to 13.5%.

Felipe Munoz, global analyst at JATO Dynamics, commented: “Uncertainty about EV incentives and the future remains a barrier for consumers considering an EV purchase. These factors, combined with low EV residual values, led to the decline in registrations in July.”
The Dacia Sandero remains the best-selling car overall
In other news, the internal combustion engine Dacia Sandero maintained its position as Europe's best selling car with sales of 22,400 units in July, up 34 percent, followed by the Volkswagen T-Roc and Toyota Yaris Cross subcompact SUVs, with the Dacia Duster taking fourth place.
In terms of brand sales, Volkswagen was the overall market leader with 108,959 registrations, followed by Toyota (75,338) and BMW (64,012).
Unsurprisingly, SUVs continue to grow in popularity: the segment will reach a record 54% of European car registrations in July 2024, and five of the top ten best-selling models are SUVs.
