BOURNE, Texas – Bourne made its first appearance in the Little League World Series tonight and did not disappoint, winning Game 1 of the season opener 9-0.
The team has a sizable fanbase around San Antonio, especially in Borne, and there have been numerous watch parties for the team's biggest games, with the biggest taking place at Free Rome Brewery in Borne.
“It's being said not only in (Williamsport) Pennsylvania about the team, but here in Borne. Talk about that,” KSAT reporter John Paul Barajas asked.
“There's a hashtag: Bern vs. the World,” said Amanda Hood, a mother from Bern who was at the viewing party.
It may be the town and team motto, but the boys aren't just representing Bohne — they're wearing the uniform for the whole region, with Southwest on their chests.
“We are proud that they had the opportunity to show off the hard work they have honed over the summer and are proud that they are representing our city, state and region. Good luck, Vaughn,” said Charlie King, Vaughn Little League vice president.
The viewing area was packed, and fans rose to their feet and cheered every time a hit was made, a pitch was thrown, or an out was made.
“This team is perfect from top to bottom. Great pitchers, really good defense, great defense,” Bone parent Chris Jensen said.
Everyone at the viewing party was smiling as they watched the team play, but one elderly man was smiling the most.
“My grandson plays second base at Bourne Southwest and I'm very proud of him. I just want to give a little shout out to Bourne,” Paul Salinas said.
