“Learning from other people's experiences” is what motivated Danielle Fishel to go public with her breast cancer diagnosis. Video above: Boy Meets World star Danielle Fishel talks about her son's rare condition, chylothorax The Boy Meets World star shared the news on Monday's episode of Pod Meets World, the podcast she co-hosts with former co-stars Will Friedle and Rider Strong. “I was recently diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in breast cancer (DCIS),” she revealed at the start of the podcast. “It's still very early on. I'm technically stage 0.” Fishel, 43, shot to fame playing the young adult version of Topanga Lawrence on the hit '90s sitcom. She explained that she was “diagnosed with high-grade DCIS with microinvasion.” DCIS stands for “ductal carcinoma in breast cancer,” and is “the earliest stage of breast cancer,” according to Breastcancer.org. “While DCIS is not life-threatening, those diagnosed with DCIS are at higher risk of developing invasive breast cancer later in life,” the site said. “DCIS accounts for approximately 20% to 25% of new breast cancers diagnosed in the United States.” Fishel seemed optimistic and positive about her diagnosis. “I'm OK. I'm going to have the surgery,” she said. “I'll have treatment after that. I've had to make a lot of decisions over the last few days.” She also said she always thought she would have kept the news a secret if she received it. But Fishel decided to share her story, quoting author Glennon Doyle's words, “The most you learn is in the very beginning of a story, or the very chaotic middle part of a story.” Fishel also credited her early diagnosis to her quick actions. “The reason I found out I had this cancer when it was still stage 0 was because the day I got the text message that my annual mammogram appointment was due, I made the appointment,” she said. Fishel reprised the role in the spin-off, Girl Meets World, which aired from 2014 to 2017. She is married to producer Jensen Karp and is the mother of two children.

The “Boy Meets World” star shared the news on Monday's episode of “Pod Meets World,” the podcast he co-hosts with former co-stars Will Friedle and Rider Strong.
“I was recently diagnosed with ductal intraductal carcinoma (DCIS), a type of breast cancer,” she revealed at the start of the podcast. “It's still in the very, very, very early stages. Stage 0 to be exact.”
Fishel, 43, who rose to fame as a young adult playing Topanga Lawrence on the hit '90s sitcom, explained that she was “diagnosed with high-grade DCIS with microinvasion.”
According to breastcancer.org, DCIS stands for “ductal carcinoma in situ” and is “the earliest stage of breast cancer.”
“DCIS is not life-threatening, but if you are diagnosed with DCIS, you are at higher risk of developing invasive breast cancer later in life,” the site states. “DCIS accounts for approximately 20% to 25% of newly diagnosed breast cancers in the United States.”
Fishel seemed optimistic and positive about her diagnosis.
“I'm OK. I'm going to have surgery to remove the tumor,” she said. “I'll continue with treatment after that. I've had to make a lot of decisions over the last few days.”
Ms Fishel also said she always thought if she received such news she would keep it a secret, but she decided to share her experience after quoting author Glennon Doyle, who said “You learn most at the very beginning of a story, or in the middle, when it's most chaotic.”
Fishel also credited the quick response for the early diagnosis.
“I was able to find out about this cancer at stage zero because I scheduled my annual mammogram the same day I got a text message saying it was time for it,” she said.
Fishel reprised the role in the spinoff, Girl Meets World, which aired from 2014 to 2017. She is married to producer Jensen Karp and is the mother of two children.
