'Warehouse of the Future' expands national distribution network to support growth of home healthcare
DUBLIN, Ohio , Aug. 28, 2024 /PRNewswire/ — Cardinal Health (NYSE: CAH) today officially announced the recent opening of a new distribution center in Greenville, South Carolina dedicated to its Home Solutions business, which is expected to create approximately 200 jobs in the area. Cardinal Health Home Solutions is a leading provider of home health care medical supplies, helping manage the medical supply needs of more than five million customers nationwide, including those with chronic and critical illnesses.
The home health industry has experienced rapid growth since the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Fortune Business Insights' May 2024 U.S. Home Health Services Market Size, Share, and Industry Analysis Report, home health in the U.S. is expected to grow from more than $100 billion in 2024 to $176.3 billion by 2032. Several factors contribute to this growth, but the primary culprit is the aging of the U.S. population and the increasing prevalence of chronic diseases. According to a report by the National Council on Aging (NCOA), seniors are one of the fastest growing populations in the U.S., with more than 80 million Americans aged 65 or older in 2040, nearly double the number in 2000. The NCOA also reports that many people aged 65 or older have at least one chronic disease, and many have multiple diseases, with primary diseases including diabetes, chronic bronchitis, etc.
“As health care continues to shift to the home, we see tremendous growth opportunities,” said Rob Schlisberg, president of Cardinal Health At-Home Solutions. “Consumers are ready to manage their health conditions from the comfort of their own homes, which is especially important for our nation's aging population. Our expansion into Greenville allows us to continue delivering on our promise to our customers and their patients while building a resilient supply chain to support this sustained growth.”
At 350,000 square feet, the distribution center is the largest supporting the Cardinal Health at-Home Solutions business to date and the second distribution center the business has built from the ground up.
“Greenville is known for its thriving manufacturing and distribution industries, providing the specially skilled workforce needed to support the operations of this facility. Hank Hiatt, senior vice president of economic competitiveness for the Greenville Chamber of Commerce, said he is pleased to welcome this state-of-the-art distribution center to the region.”
“Cardinal Health At-Home Solutions is a great fit for Greenville. Our region's focus on innovation makes it a perfect fit for this business supporting critical services in the increasingly important healthcare sector,” said Hiatt. “We are proud that Cardinal Health understands the value of our community with its strong workforce, world-class transportation and fantastic quality of life, and we look forward to the company being a part of Greenville for many years to come.”
On-site warehouse associates work with the latest automation, artificial intelligence and robotics technology to deliver approximately 8,000 packages directly to patients' homes each day, including products such as diabetic supplies like continuous glucose monitors, incontinence and stoma supplies, breast pumps, enteral feeding pumps and formula.
“We often say, 'When you touch a package, you touch a patient's life,' and we take this motto seriously,” Schlissberg said. “We're pleased to have the Greenville community join us in our important mission of getting medical supplies to patients when and where they need them.”
