Carolyn Dobson, a Republican candidate for Alabama's 2nd Congressional District election this fall, recently voiced her support and excitement for the future of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology in applications at the state and national level.
A newcomer to Alabama politics, Dobson is preparing to face off against Democratic candidate Shomali Figures in the newly drawn 2nd Congressional District in November.
Bitcoin, cryptocurrency and blockchain technology have been sweeping the political world lately. The new technology has traditionally attracted support from libertarians who have been highly critical of the Federal Reserve and the nation's reliance on fiat currency.
But in recent years, Republicans have been paying more attention to cryptocurrencies amid growing concerns about inflation, economic instability and a possible recession. Former President Donald Trump recently expressed interest in promoting cryptocurrencies during his keynote speech at the Bitcoin 2024 conference on July 27. During the speech, Trump suggested cryptocurrencies could be a worthwhile tool for the government to invest in.
Speaking on Montgomery Radio’s News Talk 93.1 “News and Views,” Dobson expressed excitement about the possibilities that blockchain technology offers.
The interest in blockchain in Alabama prompted the popular cryptocurrency exchange to hold a town hall in Montgomery on Wednesday night, inviting advocates and state lawmakers to discuss the future of the technology in the state. The event took place at Prevail Union Coffee in Montgomery, and Dobson was an enthusiastic supporter.
I'm glad I could help welcome you @Coinbase and Translator This afternoon I will be in Alabama to discuss the future of cryptocurrency in our state.

Dobson also praised Prevail as one of the few stores in the city that accepts cryptocurrency at its register, and touted a similar policy in his own campaign that allows crypto donations.
“Prevail Union is now accepting crypto payments and so are our campaigns,” Dobson said, “so if any of you listening to this show are interested in donating to our campaigns using crypto, please check out our website.”
Dobson briefly spoke about the perceived benefits of cryptocurrency in Alabama communities, even suggesting that the technology could be used for a more secure voting system due to the tamper-proof transmission of data via the blockchain.
“I think there's a lot of potential applications in rural areas because of Biden's restrictions on the banking industry,” Dobson said. “Unfortunately, a lot of community banks are going to close, so this could be an alternative.”
She added, “Just looking at the technology alone, when it comes to voting integrity, blockchain could be the way of the future to ensure the integrity of elections.”
