Tropical storm “Chido” hit Mayotte, a French territory in the Indian Ocean, on Saturday. According to local authorities, at least two people were killed. Deaths were reported on Petit-Terre, the smaller of Mayotte's two main islands. More than 15,000 households remained without electricity on Saturday.
According to the French Meteorological Agency Meteo France, the wind associated with this element in some places will reach 226 kilometers per hour.
Ibrahim Makolo, a resident of the main island of Grande Terre, said strong winds toppled power poles, tore roofs from houses and uprooted trees. – We don't have electricity, Makolo told AFP. “Even in our well-protected house, water flows,” he added.

“The most devastating hurricane of 1934”
In Mayotte, the poorest department of France, located 500 kilometers east of Mozambique, many people lost everything.
“Chido is the strongest and most destructive hurricane since 1934,” official Francois-Xavier Bievil said. On Saturday, he urged the residents of Mayotte to stay at home because the weather has not calmed down yet. He adds that communicating with Mayotte is mostly difficult.
Authorities have turned more than 70 schools and gymnasiums into shelters for those in need.
