On Tuesday, the joint committees of the economy and development and social and family policy gave a positive opinion on the proposal of the left to establish a holiday on December 24. At the same time, the committees supported the amendment of the Civil Alliance, which will take effect from February 1, 2025, and the addition of the third shopping Sunday in December.
On non-working days, 33 deputies voted in favor of the Law amendment project, none were against, and 23 abstained.
We will have to wait until Christmas Eve
Previously, the committees made changes to the project proposed by the Civil Alliance. Committees, among others, supported. change so that the new decisions take effect from February 2025.
The committees also voted in favor of amending the draft CO to be completed on the three Sundays before the Christmas commercial holiday. According to current business rules, there are two Sundays in the last month of the year (in 2024, December 15 and 22).
However, the amendment proposed by Poland 2050 MP Rysard Petru, which should be business every first Sunday of the month, did not win the majority of the committee. The representative announced that the amendment would be submitted as a minority proposal. The second reading of the bill in the Sejm is scheduled for Wednesday.
How much will it cost?
Agnieszka Dziemianowicz-Bak, Minister of the Family, noted at the committee meeting that the ministry prepared cost estimates based on the Epiphany weekend. According to the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy, these costs range from PLN 0.3 billion to PLN 1 billion.
The head of the Ministry of Labor and Social Policy also emphasized that Christmas Eve is not a normal working day, so it is difficult to assess the economic impact of this solution.
The “Left” project proposes that December 24 be set as a day off for all employees, including employees of commercial institutions, for whom – according to the law on the restriction of trade on Sundays and holidays – Christmas Eve until It is 14 working days.
