The 17th HYLI was held in Bali, an island known for its sustainability initiatives, eco-friendly projects and rich cultural heritage. Bali is also home to the Nusa Penida Microgrid, which Hitachi Energy is deploying in collaboration with PT Surya Energi Indotama as a green energy showcase for the G20 Summit to be held in Bali in 2022. The Nusa Penida Microgrid, operated by PT Indonesia Power, will provide clean energy to over 10,000 households, supporting Indonesia's energy transition. The initiative demonstrates efforts to reduce dependency on fossil fuels and accelerate the transition to renewable energy.
This year’s four-day programme focused on key aspects of sustainable development through four lively plenary sessions: “Health and Wellbeing”, “Affordable Clean Energy”, “Reducing Inequalities” and “Sustainable Cities and Communities”.
Hirohito Nakakita, Chairman of Hitachi Asia Ltd., said: “True to Hitachi's beliefs, inspiring and nurturing the next generation of leaders is one of the many ways Hitachi contributes to society. It is heartening to see these young representatives at HYLI discussing ideas in the hope of creating a more sustainable world. We believe that HYLI will open up more opportunities for these social innovators to shape a more inclusive future.”
A tabebuia tree, symbolizing the delegates' diverse cultures, was planted on the Nusa Penida microgrid and the delegates got a first-hand look at its operation bringing clean energy to the island. The selection of the tabebuia to decorate Hitachi's microgrid in Nusa Penida symbolizes beauty, renewal and resilience, reflecting the world's stride towards a more sustainable future.
The story continues
“The four-day experience was truly amazing. Not only did I have the opportunity to meet new friends, but it also broadened my horizons. Through the panel sessions, workshops, discussions, and our visit to Hitachi's microgrid in Nusa Penida, I was able to learn about technologies that can effectively supply clean energy for a sustainable future.”
Additionally, the mentorship sessions provided valuable insights into applying critical thinking to solve the challenges of achieving the SDGs,” said Seya Biryah from Udayana University Bali, Indonesia.
Dr. Agung Wikasono, an Indonesian graduate of the 3rd HYLI in 1999 and currently Vice President for Funding and Investment of Indonesia's new capital city, Nusantara, addressed the students on the importance of sustainability and leadership as crucial concepts for the younger generation to excel in their skill sets.
“To build a thriving future, we must instill values of sustainability and leadership in our young people. These principles are essential to equip them with the skills they need to survive and thrive in an ever-evolving world,” Dr Agung added.
Since its inception in 1996, HYLI has provided over 400 students with the opportunity to broaden their horizons and promote Asian values and intercultural understanding. Held every two years, the program provides an exclusive platform for talented university students to actively discuss important global issues with renowned lecturers.
