Kongsberg Maritime has been awarded a contract by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry to supply a mission-critical technology package for a new wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV) currently being built for Cadeler, a shipping and construction company operating in the offshore wind industry.
This is the fifth Cadeler offshore installation vessel to be built at China COSCO Qidong shipyard, all equipped with Kongsberg Maritime systems. This latest contract is worth approximately NOK 350 million.
The GUSTO NG-20000X designed newbuild will be the third A-class WTIV to join the Cadeler fleet and with 5,600 m2 of deck space and over 17,600 tonnes of loading capacity, it will be one of the world's largest installation vessels for the offshore wind market.
Kongsberg Maritime will supply the complete electrical, automation and propulsion system, including a system consisting of nine thrusters with fixed pitch propellers. The package includes four UUC355FP main propulsion thrusters, two ULE355FP retractable azimuth thrusters and two TT3300DPNFP tunnel thrusters.
The electrical system features generators, MV and LV SWBD, DC-SWBD, ESS, propulsion drives as well as an integrated control system including a Dynamic Positioning (DP) system. Customized energy control capabilities also optimize the vessel's energy efficiency, and the battery hybrid electric system allows for a reduction in the number of engines required for crane operations and maneuvering.
Cadeler is already building two P class, two M class and three A class vessels, with the last one due for delivery in the first half of 2027.
Speaking at the naming ceremony for the newest P-Class vessel, Windpeak, Cadeler CEO Mikkel Griup said: “Our vessels are designed to meet both the current and future demands of the offshore industry. The growing need for efficient offshore wind farms to support global sustainability goals demands larger turbines and more advanced vessels to install them. KONGSBERG's cutting-edge technology plays a key role in making this possible.”
Halvor Økland, Tender Engineering Director for Integrated Solutions at Kongsberg Maritime, added: “We are pleased to have once again been awarded this important contract by COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry to supply a wide range of technology for Cadeler’s latest jack-up vessel.
“The company has exciting plans for the future of offshore wind installations and its continued investment in its state-of-the-art installation fleet is setting the standard for the offshore wind business. The recent completion of our newest build, Wind Peak, is a proud moment for the Kongsberg Maritime team and we look forward to working with COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry to deliver the remainder of these highly capable vessels.”
