Former AC Milan defender Alessandro Costacurta has suggested that Milan will perform well in the Champions League this season.
Speaking on Sky Sport Italia (via Milano News ), Costacurta reacted to the Champions League draw results, which saw the Rossoneri booked matches against Real Madrid and Liverpool.
This is the first Champions League game since the group stage was overhauled, with Milan playing eight different teams and being placed in a 36-team league table rather than groups of four.
Milan is in Pot 2 and will face two very tough teams in Pot 1, Real Madrid and Liverpool, while their match against Bayer Leverkusen in Pot 2 will be very tough. Not only that, but many fans will be very happy with the quality of the teams Milan will face.
Costacurta believes Milan's Champions League record would normally mean nothing but, given the current draw, he believes the team can place more emphasis on the tournament than on this season's league matches.
“I think Milan are more of a European team than an Italian one. Too much is said about Milan's history and they have nothing to do with it. But in a way I believe they can focus more on Europe than Italy. They will have a good journey in Europe,” he said.
