NEWTOWN, Pa. (WPVI) — Council Rock-Newtown advanced to the next round of the Little League World Series on Saturday.
They didn't allow their opponents from Salem, New Hampshire, to score a single point over the weekend.
The Green Parrot in Newtown, Bucks County, was packed as local residents celebrated the win.
“Our nephew Gavin (No. 18) is also on the team and we're here to cheer him on and support him,” said Kelly Caudill of Yardley.
When the game started at 7pm, the stands were full and everyone was glued to their television sets.
“I grew up in this program. The community always rallies around this team. They're a great group of kids. I still coach in the league and there's nothing like seeing these guys perform on this big stage,” Eric Miller explained.
Whether it was Williamsport or Newtown, the community came out to support the boys as they took on New Hampshire.
“These kids have been playing together for years, it's bringing the community together and we have special T-shirts for the viewing party, and we're hoping these kids get better and bring the W home to Newtown,” said Sarah Zorich of Newtown.
Council Rock Newtown lost to a Texas team, 9-0, on Thursday.
So the pressure was on to win or lose.
It didn't take long for Newtown to score and take the lead.
“We're proud of him, we're proud of everybody. It's amazing and it brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it,” Caudill explained.
They next face Washington on Sunday at 1 p.m.
“I think they have the ability to go all the way, I know the grit of these guys, and I think they have a chance to go all the way,” Miller said.
