During the seventh time since the beginning of the year, there were issues with telephone communications in the Cuban capital. The reason for this was theft of wires over 600 meters. Cubans struggling with the economic crisis steal copper cables to sell them on the black market later.
On Sunday, Cuban authorities announced interference in telephone communications caused by the theft of telecommunications cables. The biggest issues were documented in two Havana districts. It’s Boieros and Elchico.

The unknown assailant took over 600 meters of wire. This has taken over telephone ranges from over 300 facilities. Additionally, hundreds of individual clients also reported issues.

According to the newspaper Tribuna de la Habana, these incidents have been happening more and more frequently these days. Seven wiring thefts have been reported since the beginning of the year, but the first act of vandalism had already been recorded in 2023.
According to the Cuban company Telecomunicaciones de Cuba, copper cables are the most common prey for burglars. The raw materials have recently achieved very high prices on the black market, and have been stolen by Cubans.
