Continuing its rankings of the best graduate and professional schools for 2025, U.S. News & World Report has ranked Case Western Reserve University 51st overall among engineering schools, meaning the Case School of Engineering has risen two spots as U.S. News has changed its methodology to focus more on research and faculty productivity.
“It's not surprising that our rankings have risen with an increased emphasis on the outstanding work of our faculty and researchers,” said Raghu Balakrishnan, Case's Charles H. Phipps Dean of Engineering. “While external rankings can't truly represent the great work being done across the Case School of Engineering, we are pleased that this more quantitative approach reflects our efforts.”
The methodology change is consistent with most of the rankings released earlier this spring, which emphasized research and less emphasis on reputation, faculty resources, and selectivity. The engineering and medicine rankings have been delayed due to questions about the source data, with the medicine rankings due to be released next month.
This year's research indicators (50% of the overall ranking) included total research expenditures (25%), average research expenditures per faculty member (15%), and faculty research (10%), a new indicator that uses bibliographic data from Scopus provided by Elsevier.
Other components of the overall ranking include peer evaluation (12.5%), recruiter evaluation (12.5%), doctoral degrees awarded (9%), doctoral-to-faculty ratio (6%), percentage of faculty in the National Academy of Engineering (5%) and acceptance rate (5%).
U.S. News & World Report also provides rankings for specialties based solely on peer evaluations by deans in each field. Case School of Engineering produced mixed results across programs: impressive jumps, relatively stable gains, and some notable declines.
