Renishaw, the global engineering company headquartered in Gloucestershire, has announced the death of its co-founder, Sir David McMurtry, at the age of 84.
Sir David established the company in April 1973, initially to develop a precision measuring tool for use on the Concorde supersonic jet.
Today the business employs more than 3,200 people in Gloucestershire and a further 2,000 worldwide.
Renishaw's high-precision measurement systems are used by companies that manufacture high-tech airplanes and bicycles, medical and dental equipment, and countless other products.
“It is with deep sadness that the company learned of the sudden death of its co-founder and non-executive director, Sir David McMurtry,” a Renishaw spokesperson said.
Sir David co-founded the company with John Deer in New Mills, near Wotton-under-Edge, where the company is still based.
They now have four further sites in Gloucestershire, in Charfield, Old Town (in Wotton), Stonehouse and Woodchester.
Until earlier this year, Sir David was executive chairman of the group. He resigned in June but remained a board member, taking an active interest in the company's innovation and technology.
