According to Eurostat, the European Union will produce more than 3 billion liters of ice cream in 2023, slightly down from the previous year. After Austria, Hungary produces the second most expensive gelato in Europe, according to the data.
According to Eurostat data, the EU will produce 3.2 billion liters of ice cream in 2023, a slight decrease of 1.4% compared to the previous year. The largest ice cream producer in the EU will be Germany, producing 612 million liters, followed by France with 568 million liters and Italy with 527 million liters. However, Eurostat noted that data was not fully available for 10 countries, including Hungary, which could cause some distortion in the rankings, 444.hu reported.
The cheapest ice cream in Germany…
Germany not only produces the most gelato, but also has the cheapest average price at €1.80 per litre, followed by Lithuania, the Czech Republic and Sweden, with prices ranging from €1.90 to €2.10 per litre.
…Austria and Hungary are the most expensive
Meanwhile, Austria recorded the highest gelato prices in Europe with an average price of €7.70 per litre. Hungary came in second with an astounding average price of €4.80 per litre, and Greece came in third with €3.70 per litre.
In terms of trade, EU countries exported 261 million kilograms of ice cream to the rest of the EU, with a value of 1.04 billion euros, while they imported 56 million kilograms, with a value of 217 million euros. The unit value of exports was about 3% higher than imports. Compared to 2022, gelato exports increased by 5%, while imports decreased by 8%.
