– Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she couldn’t imagine something like this happening, referring to Donald Trump’s words. The US president-elect said he could not rule out the use of force to take control of Greenland.
“I would like to appeal to everyone to remain calm,” the prime minister said in an interview with Danish television station TV2.
Mette Frederiksen stressed that economic exchanges are the basis of mutual relations between Denmark and the United States and that she hopes to maintain them.
– I think we need to properly maintain mutual trade relations (…). As a very close ally of the United States, I believe there is reason to be happy about the increased American interest. However, the Prime Minister stressed that this must be done with respect for the people of Greenland.
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark.
President Donald Trump has not ruled out the use of force
At a press conference on Tuesday, Donald Trump was asked whether he would avoid military or economic coercion regarding the Panama Canal and Greenland.

– No, we cannot guarantee either of these two (issue – ed.). But we can say that we need them for economic security, the US president-elect said. Reuters reported that “President Trump has indicated that he will impose tariffs on Denmark if it rejects his offer to buy Greenland.”
Regarding “military action,” Trump said he was “not going to promise” that there would be no such action, as reported by AFP. “We might have to do something,” he added.
