SpaceX CEO Elon Musk expressed optimism on Saturday about the company's performance under rival rocket maker Boeing SpaceX's new CEO, hours after NASA announced that astronauts who went to space aboard Boeing's Starliner would return aboard a SpaceX spacecraft.
What Happened: “Boeing's new CEO is spending time in the factory, and that's the right thing to do,” Musk said. Boeing's new CEO, Kelly Ortberg, took over the reins of the company from Dave Calhoun earlier this month. Ortberg said at the time that he would be based in Seattle, near the company's manufacturing facility in Renton.

Musk's comments about Boeing came hours after NASA announced that astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, who went to space in February on Boeing's Starliner spacecraft, would return on a SpaceX spacecraft. Citing safety commitments, NASA said the Starliner spacecraft is scheduled to return to Earth under its own power in early September.
Why it matters: Williams and Wilmore launched into space aboard Boeing's Starliner spacecraft on June 5. They were scheduled to return about eight days later, but their return was delayed after the spacecraft encountered technical issues during docking.
Boeing's Starliner spacecraft has suffered multiple delays since its inception. The spacecraft was scheduled to make its first unmanned test flight in 2015, but it was postponed to 2019. The spacecraft then failed to reach its planned orbit. In 2022, the spacecraft made its first successful unmanned flight to the International Space Station.
Musk said in May that Boeing's delays were due to the company having “too many non-technical managers,” reiterating his belief that manufacturing companies should have engineers at management levels.
