Veterinarians have confirmed that the three-month-old red panda died as a result of a fireworks display on November 5, the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS) said in a statement.
RZSS director Ben Supley said: “This is very sad. She simply suffocated from her stomach contents and veterinarians say this was a reaction to an explosion in the area.” Ta.
Even though Roxy had free access to the cave where she lived each day, RZSS officials believe she died as a result of long-term stress. Furthermore, fireworks have been shown to have a devastating effect not only on the animals at Edinburgh Zoo, but also on other animals.

Under UK law, fireworks cannot be set off between 11pm and 7am, except on New Year's Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year, when different ending times apply. In Scotland, private fireworks are only permitted between 6pm and 11pm.

The RZSS chief also said that while the area excluded from fireworks use is a positive step, noise concerns have not diminished.
Scottish Safety Minister Siobhan Brown acknowledged that the impact of fireworks on animals was worrying and sad, but said the question of introducing a ban was not within the remit of Scottish decision-makers.
– As part of our mandate, we empower local governments to designate Fireworks Control Zones where the firing of fireworks is prohibited in their area. She said this year they were being used for the first time in the Edinburgh area on Bonfire Night.

Mr Brown has also written to the UK Government asking for a meeting to discuss a constructive solution.
A UK Department of Industry and Trade spokesperson said: “To protect the safety of pets and the public, we have launched a new fireworks safety campaign this season to help people use fireworks safely and correctly.”
