Until recently, Elbieta Orszewska lived alone in Warsaw. Her only son, Michael Orsski, has been in the UK since 2006. He regularly visited his mother, but he was unable to take care of her.

It was not until March 25th this year that the Home Office, which deals with immigration policy, said the application was rejected because it was submitted in an incorrect manner.

“The process (…) consists of using the appropriate paper format. The application was submitted online” – submitted in response. The office also said the 80-year-old was illegally in the country, with the consequences being the result, including fines, prisons, and even deportation and a ban on returning to the UK.

Michał Olszewski said in an interview with “The Guardian” that he feels bitter because “he pays taxes and is a decent citizen.” In his opinion, the home office does not have time to correct the error, so his decision must be transferred beforehand.
“It’s a country of law and democracy, but this decision appears to have been made by Soviet bureaucracy,” he said.
– That’s a huge shame from the office. It wasn’t until six months later that they informed us that the application was disabled. Mom was very worried. I am her only child, we are very close and we want to spend our last year together – he said.

The family turned to their lawyers. Katherine Smith, who represents the family, said the impact of the decision was “very dramatic” as the 80-year-old was not given time to properly submit the application. Plans to begin the process.
The UK’s Home Office did not comment on the incident.
