The 37th European Film Awards will be held in Lucerne this year. This is the first time that Switzerland is the host of this ceremony. Among the nominees are two Polish plays: “The Girl with the Needle” by Magnus von Horne and “The Stop” by Alina Maksimenko.
The European Film Awards is an award given annually by the European Film Academy, which currently has 5,400 members. The awards were established in 1988 and were known as the Felix Awards until 1996. According to the estimates of its authors, they should have weighed alongside the American Oscar and become the main European film award. The first winner of the European film category was Krzysztof Kieslowski, who was awarded in 1988 for “Short film about murder”.
This year, the Academy changed the rules of the awards, opening the European Film category to titles nominated in the European Animation and Documentary categories. Thus, not five, but 15 titles were nominated in the most important section.
