The Dacia Sandero was the top-selling car in Europe in the first half of 2024, overtaking the Tesla Model Y. The Tesla Model Y has dropped to eighth place in European car sales, while the VW Golf maintains its second place position. Hatchbacks and small SUVs remain the most popular car segments in Europe.
Last year, the Tesla Model Y was a big hit in Europe, becoming the best-selling new car on the continent. Fast forward to the first half of 2024, and the Model Y has fallen down the rankings, falling behind many of the smaller cars that have been selling well every year.
According to European Union and UK sales data, from January to June, the Dacia Sandero was the top-selling new car with 143,596 registrations. The Sandero has long been one of the most popular cars in Europe, in part because of its extremely affordable price, starting at just 11,500 euros (about $12,500 at current exchange rates).

Coming in second is the VW Golf, which sold 126,993 units in the first half of 2024, beating out the Renault Clio in third place with 114,623 units. Following closely behind the little French hatchback is the VW T-Roc, Europe's best-selling SUV, with 111,381 new registrations this year.
The Peugeot 208 has dropped down the rankings to fifth place, despite topping the sales figures in 2022 ahead of the Dacia Sandero and VW T-Roc, with 107,097 units registered across the continent in the first half of the year. Behind the 208 sits another VW Group car, the Skoda Octavia, which sold 102,945 units between January and June, enough to secure seventh place, just ahead of the Citroën C3, which sold 102,304 units.

And in eighth place is the Tesla Model Y. 101,181 new Model Ys were registered across the EU and UK this year. Although that's down on last year, the sales results are impressive considering it's the best-selling new EV on the market and is significantly more expensive than the other vehicles on the list.
Following the Model Y was the Toyota Yaris Cross with 99,694 new registrations, just beating out its mechanically related cousin, the Toyota Yaris hatchback, which recorded cumulative sales of 93,576 units.
